States Update and a recommendation

So far we are enjoying our states unit.  We’ve taken a break this week to do a much needing clean-out upstairs, which is going to conclude with cleaning the carpets 😛   I am looking forward to jumpin’ back in at the end of the week by starting in the New England States.  We have some fun activities to do like making a New England boiled dinner, learning about whaling, clams and other cool things up north.

So far in our postcard collection we have: 2 Florida, 1 New York and a Georgia that we picked up at Lookout Mountain. We have promises for several other places from family and friends and we’re looking forward to getting those.

We also got several out of country postcards from a certain Ann of Green Gables look-a-like that included: Canada, Prince Edward Island (of course) and Nova Scotia.  These were really neat and we learned a lot of new things about our neighbors to the north thanks to the wonderful commentary on the backs.

I was really excited about a site that my sis in FL recommended called postcrossing.com that allows you to sign up to send and receive postcards to & from people all over the world.  We signed up and requested 5 names (the max at one time) to which we will mail postcards.  When they receive them, they will enter our code online (that we wrote on the postcard) and then our name will be given to five people to send one to us.  Then we can do it all again.  Hopefully we’ll get some from other states this way, and it will be neat to also get more from other countries. The five names we received came from Finland, Germany, Norway, Netherlands and Canada.   If you enjoy getting something in the mail besides bills, check it out 🙂

Thanks to those who have mailed postcards so far.  The kids are really into it.  (And me, too 🙂 )  We would love to get more from different places in Georgia since we’ll be studying it in depth when we get to it.  Like, one from Savannah would be cool – I wonder if we know anyone going there 🙂 (Shameless, I know)

  2. Yay! I’m glad you got the postcards 🙂 I should probably send one from VA while I’m here. Will have to wait until this wknd though as I’m ankle deep in the finer points of educational leadership and sinking way under the demands of APA style writing 🙂

Debby, don’t tell me that! That would have been great. I’ll email you my address in case he goes anywhere else out of state 🙂

Okay well don’t forget to email it to me because he may have to go again and he travels a fair bit usually. I also might be able to get someone from The Land Down Under to send a postcard to the kids as well.
